Three friends who loved to surf got frustrated at the state of the beaches and waters where they surfed due to the constant washing up of rubbish and decided to do something about it.
This planted the seed for what today is Ocean Beer and the recipe for our IPA is still the original one.
Early June 2022, Heineken Portugal was approached by a small, unknown-to-them beer asking for help. The beer was a purpose-led beer, set up to create new streams of funding for SGD14, the most under-funded of the SDGs. This beer, Ocean Beer, had been asked by the organisers of the Official UN Ocean Conference side-event, to be the exclusive beer. Imagine how exciting for an initiative that exists to support SDG14, to be invited to the conference on SDG14. But as a one-year-old organisation, we knew we were too small to take on such an undertaking. So, we reached out to Heineken Portugal, introduced ourselves and told them of our dilemma. We didn’t have the logistics or infrastructure to take on such a large event, and there was a requirement to provide free beer at certain high-end events which as a foundation was impossible for us to fulfil.
We would be lying if we said we weren’t a tad surprised when Heineken came back with a “Yes! This is exactly the sort of initiatives Heineken should be supporting.” But more than shocked we were excited. Somehow, they had understood us. They had seen past that Ocean Beer might look like a competitor and instead, saw a platform from which to help the planet with their expertise.
In the end, Heineken provided all the refrigerators, kindly rebranded with our vinyls, and the free beers for the VIP events. Heineken had offered the tent and bars but sadly these were turned down by the event organisers that were going for a certain look. But the most important thing we received from Heineken, was confidence. The team repeatedly said, if you need anything else, just let us know. It gave us comfort to know that should we be overwhelmed or suddenly need anything we hadn’t foreseen, Heineken was there to save the day. And just like that, a one year old beer was the official beer at the highest level event of its purpose, being drunk by anybody who is anybody in ocean protection and restoration. The Ocean Beer bar became the meeting point for Ministers and other government officials, scientists, activists, film makers, innovators, investors and lobbyists and many deals, research and projects were brokered there.
Thank you Heineken – for this you will always be our (second) favourite beer!
Huge thanks must go to the immensely patient and generous Jan Derck Van Karnebeek, Ricardo Caseiro, Jose Tobar and Valter Cardoso.
It all began in lockdown over a virtual meeting when the Ocean Born Foundation was still just an idea. Cristina listened to our vision of how to contribute to the plight of the ocean, gave us advice, and encouraged us to give it a shot. The following year Cristina invited Ocean Beer to be a part of SeaLegacy’s Good Ocean community which is composed of passionate and proactive business owners unified by an ability and commitment to disrupt the retail industry and make steps towards systemic change in our consumer culture. One year later our relationship had deepened, and Cristina joined our Ocean Born family by becoming a patron and in 2023 joined the Ocean Born Science & Impact Advisory Committee.
Cristina’s journey has been impressive. Born in Mexico City, Cristina’s inimitable body of work over the last 25 years includes being an award-winning photographer, marine biologist, and conservationist. She graduated from ITESM University with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences and attended the Fine Art Photography program at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington, D.C. She founded the prestigious International League of Conservation Photographers to provide a platform for photographers working on environmental issues, and also founded SeaLegacy, a non-profit dedicated to protecting the ocean.
Cristina’s relentless commitment stretches beyond being a patron for the Ocean Born Foundation. She is UN Ambassador to SDG 14 “Life underwater”, a member of the World Photographic Academy, and a Sony Artisan of Imagery. Furthermore, Cristina was recognised as one of the World’s top 40 Most Influential Outdoor Photographers by Outdoor Magazine and was named one of National Geographic’s 2018 Adventurers of the Year.
At Ocean Beer, hope is at the core of everything which is why we love to share our Ocean Beer story of Maple and why she is Head of Hope.
In the very early days of Ocean Beer, Martin, one of the founders, and one of the sales team were travelling around Andalucia presenting the beer to the on-trade. While talking with the owner of a bar in El Palmar, a small and visibly ill dog walked in begging for scraps, which it received and duly left. It had a bleeding, tennis ball sized tumour on its side, and a leg it could not use. Martin inquired about the dog and everyone agreed it was very sad, the sweet dog came by most days asking for food and all wondered why no one did anything about it.
But in the spirit of the Lorax, if not you, who? After visiting more potential clients, Martin returned to where he had seen the dog to pick it up and take it to a veterinary hospital. He spent several hours searching but couldn’t find her. Martin returned home disheartened that so many knew about the dog but hoped someone else would do something. We humans seem to easily forget that it is on us to make the changes we want to see in the world. After sharing the story with his wife, she initiated a significant campaign through social media to locate the dog. Many friends in Andalucia chipped in to help locate it and it was Fernando at Salvando Peludos who after a few weeks found her and brought her to Madrid.
After three surgeries, a serious grooming session and much love and human kindness, little Maple has made a full recovery and is a joyful, much loved and caring member of the family. Despite her petite frame she looks after a large, insecure rescue dog with an abusive past, has managed for the cats not to feel threatened by her and doesn’t bother the chickens. She also makes frequent visits to the Ocean Born office to check in with the team.
Maple’s story is one like The Star Thrower. As individuals, we cannot save the world – but with kindness, empathy and respect, we can make it better, even if one individual at a time.
